Psalm 116
1 I love the Lord because he hears my voice
and my prayer for mercy.
2 Because he bends down to listen,
I will pray as long as I have breath!
3 Death wrapped its ropes around me;
the terrors of the grave[a] overtook me.
I saw only trouble and sorrow.
4 Then I called on the name of the Lord:
“Please, Lord, save me!”
5 How kind the Lord is! How good he is!
So merciful, this God of ours!
6 The Lord protects those of childlike faith;
I was facing death, and he saved me.
7 Let my soul be at rest again,
for the Lord has been good to me.
8 He has saved me from death,
my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling.
9 And so I walk in the Lord’s presence
as I live here on earth!
and my prayer for mercy.
2 Because he bends down to listen,
I will pray as long as I have breath!
3 Death wrapped its ropes around me;
the terrors of the grave[a] overtook me.
I saw only trouble and sorrow.
4 Then I called on the name of the Lord:
“Please, Lord, save me!”
5 How kind the Lord is! How good he is!
So merciful, this God of ours!
6 The Lord protects those of childlike faith;
I was facing death, and he saved me.
7 Let my soul be at rest again,
for the Lord has been good to me.
8 He has saved me from death,
my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling.
9 And so I walk in the Lord’s presence
as I live here on earth!
New Living Translation (NLT)
This is a psalm that is sung at passover time. It's a time when the Jewish people celebrate the great deliverance God gave them from slavery in Egypt. They remember the pain and the sorrow of being slaves. They remember the desperation that filled their hearts and feelings of hopelessness as this family cried out to God for four hundred years. Then they celebrate the joy of how when things looked so hopeless that God came in powerfully and miraculously delivered them from their oppressers. This psalm is a part of a group of songs called the Hallel. Halles is a word that means a very exuberant, shining, demonstrative praise. Romans 6 tells us that we are slaves to sin when we commit sin. We were hopelessly lost in sin. Yet God in a moment of time through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ has broken the chains of sin to all who will call on His name.
